As a professional lymphatic therapist, I typically work with clients who are experiencing complicated medical conditions and they’re seeking ways to improve their overall health & well-being. One question that frequently comes up is whether they should consider getting a Colonic (colon hydrotherapy). While Colonics are not for everyone, they can be beneficial for certain individuals. In this post, I’ll explore how to know if you might need a Colonic and who makes a good candidate for this procedure.
What Is a Colonic?
The practice of Colon Hydrotherapy is a therapeutic procedure that involves the introduction of warm, temperature-regulated filtered water in the colon (the large intestine), where the waste is softened and loosened resulting in evacuation to remove waste and toxins through natural peristalsis; this is repeated several times during the session. The process is performed by a certified practitioner using specialized equipment in a safe and controlled environment. The treatment has roots in ancient practices but has been modernized with advanced technology to ensure comfort and hygiene.
How Do You Know If You Need a Colonic?
Here are some signs that you might benefit from a Colonic:
Chronic Constipation or Irregular Bowel Movements - If you struggle with infrequent bowel movements, bloating, or a feeling of incomplete evacuation, a colonic may help clear out built-up waste and restore regularity.
Bloating and Gas - Persistent bloating and gas can be a sign that your digestive system isn’t functioning optimally. A colonic may help relieve these symptoms by removing trapped gas and waste.
Low Energy and Fatigue - When your colon is congested, it can impact your overall energy levels. Detoxifying the colon may help you feel lighter and more energized.
Skin Issues - Skin problems like acne, eczema, or rashes can sometimes be linked to poor digestion and toxin buildup. A colonic may help improve skin health by supporting the body’s detoxification process.
Preparing for a Detox or Cleanse - If you’re planning to do a detox or cleanse, a colonic can be a helpful way to kickstart the process by clearing out the colon.
Food Sensitivities or Digestive Discomfort - If you experience frequent digestive discomfort or suspect food sensitivities, a colonic may help reset your gut and improve digestion.
Are Colonics Painful?
In my book, NO! There are many types of Colonic equipment, practices and practitioners. Personally, I don’t want my Colonic to be uncomfortable, so when I experienced the Gravity Method Colonic by a skilled practitioner, I was sold, and within a year, I was in school, learning to be a Colon Hydrotherapist! I pride myself on explaining each step I’m taking, being mindful of my clients’ individual concerns and creating a nurturing environment where my clients don’t feel rushed or hurried through the process.
A "Wow" Moment
One of my favorite moments is when a new client returns from the restroom with a “Wow!!” look on their face…when they realize that they really CAN feel so much better after their colon has been gently evacuated. As my late Aunt Jean used to say “Nothin’ like a good BM!” (she was a hoot!).
